Your Guide to Getting a Residence Visa in Thailand

If you’re thinking about making Thailand your long-term home, a Residence Visa is an excellent option. This visa allows you to stay in Thailand permanently, provided you meet certain conditions and requirements. It’s a great choice for those who want to live, work, or retire in Thailand without the need to frequently renew short-term visas. Let’s explore the details of obtaining a Residence Visa in Thailand.

Requirements for a Residence Visa in Thailand

Applying for a Residence Visa in Thailand involves a more detailed process than short-term visas. Here are the key requirements you must meet

  • Holding a Non-Immigrant Visa: You must already hold a Non-Immigrant Visa (typically Non-Immigrant B, O, or ED) and have lived in Thailand for at least three consecutive years on that visa.

  • Proof of Income: For applicants employed in Thailand, proof of a monthly income of at least 80,000 Thai Baht (approx. 2,400 USD) or evidence of an annual income of 100,000 Thai Baht (approx. 3,000 USD) for at least two consecutive years.

  • Tax Payments: Evidence of personal income tax payment in Thailand for the past three years.

  • Criminal Background Check: A police clearance certificate from your home country and a local Thai police clearance showing no criminal record.

  • Medical Certificate: A certificate from a recognized Thai hospital stating that you are free from certain prohibited diseases, such as leprosy or tuberculosis.

  • Marriage or Family Ties: If applying on the basis of family, proof of marriage to a Thai national or birth certificates of Thai children.

  • Thai Language Proficiency: Basic proficiency in the Thai language is required. You may need to undergo an interview in Thai as part of the application process.

  • Residence Visa Application Fee: The application fee for a Residence Visa is 7,600 Thai Baht (approx. 230 USD) and an additional 191,400 Thai Baht (approx. 5,800 USD) once approved.

Post-Application Responsibilities

After your Residence Visa is granted, there are several important responsibilities to keep in mind:

  • Annual Reporting: You are required to report to the Immigration Office once a year to confirm your current address in Thailand.

  • Re-Entry Permit: If you plan to travel outside Thailand, you must obtain a re-entry permit to maintain your residence status. We can assist with obtaining this permit for 1,000 Thai Baht (approx. 30 USD) for a single entry or 3,800 Thai Baht (approx. 115 USD) for a multiple-entry permit.

  • Adherence to Thai Laws: You must comply with all Thai laws and regulations to maintain your residency status. Any violation could result in the revocation of your residence permit.

  • Thai Citizenship Option: After holding a Residence Visa for at least five consecutive years, you may become eligible to apply for Thai citizenship. We can assist you with this process if you choose to pursue it.
